This year’s competition was particularly special as it took place on the 150th birthday of Ireland’s greatest poet. Schools participated from all over County Sligo. Coola PPS prominently featured with three of its students being shortlisted in the final twelve – Saoirse Gilgarro, Ferdia Durkin and James Baker. Ferdia Durkin came 2nd overall winning a Kindle Fire while James Baker’s essay was highly commended at 4th place.

Coola Sixtieth Anniversary

Posted by on Mar 30, 2015 in Sports | 0 comments

Coola Post Primary School opened their doors 60 years ago this year and will celebrate this anniversary on 4th April 2015.  The Organising Committee is planning to host a Coola Gathering in the school on that day whereby past pupils will be given the opportunity to visit the school during the day and see the many new developments and changes that have taken place over the years.  Light refreshment will be available and people will get a chance to meet old friends, browse through the various classrooms, view old photos and memorabilia, taking them down memory lane.

This gathering will culminate with a dinner dance in the Radisson Blue Hotel that Easter Saturday night, 4th April.  Tickets for this dinner dance will be available at a later date.  We also plan to produce a book on the history of Coola School which would be launched and available to buy on that day/night.  We are inviting all past pupils who may have old photos, or may like to send in articles for submission in the publication, to get in touch with us.  We look forward to hearing from you and hope that you will join with us to celebrate this momentous occasion.

You can contact us by email at coolapps@msletb.ie or by phoning the school office on 0719165365, or by commenting on our facebook page Coola Sixtieth Anniversary. Click here to visit the facebook page.

Kilimanjaro Climb

Posted by on Dec 27, 2013 in Sports | 0 comments

We were delighted to present James McTiernan with a cheque for €1000 which was raised in the school for his kilimanjaro Climb.  The money was raised during a non uniform day and a staff coffee morning. We would like to thank all students and staff who contributed to this fundraising. James took on this difficult climb in order to raise funds for the Northwest Hospice in Sligo. We would like to congratulate James on completing the climb and raining a lot of funds for the Northwest Hospice. You can read more about the reason behind the climb in the text below.

DSCF6545

I will be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania in memory of my younger brother, Aidan, who passed away with melanoma cancer in 2008 at the age of 25. Having being given the all clear in October 2007 after a fight for 12 months he was ready to start his life and was looking forward to going back to work and planning his future. Within 2 months the cancer had mushroomed again in his body and this time unfortunately he was told that he would not be able to beat it.

From the time he was diagnosed as terminal the Northwest Hospice in Sligo were fantastic in providing support not only to Aidan but to us as a family. From the palliative care team that called on a regular basis to our home to help relieve the agonising pain he suffered with, to the respite facilities he utilised in the hospice itself; the hospice staff always provided an invaluable service. This service was always delivered with a smile, humour when appropriate and most importantly constant caring and professionalism. Our family could not speak highly enough of the Northwest Hospice Team.

Last August I visited the hospice again for the first time since my brother passed away. Unfortunately my father in law, Jerome Dufficy, had reason to use their services in his last weeks prior to his passing due to Motor Neuron Disease. Once again their patience, dedication and support shown towards him and the family were invaluable.

On September 12th thanks to a competition win sponsored by O2 and Kilimanjaro Achievers, I will be climbing Kilimanjaro the highest free standing mountain in the world standing at 19,340 ft (5895m). This climb in memory of my brother Aidan and my father in law Jerome. I know the pain and suffering I will likely feel on my journey will be nothing compared to the heroic people who bravely battle their illness with dignity, courage and humour. They are a constant inspiration to us as we go through our daily lives.

Each year the North West Hospice requires €1million to continue their services, I hope that with your help I could help them reach this total and in doing so help many other terminally ill patients receive the same high standard of care that my brother and father in law experienced.

On Thursday 12th September, the staff and pupils of Coola Post Primary School welcomed the visit of Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairí Quinn, to view their new extension and plans for the proposed Phase 2 of the building.  He was given a tour of the school, meeting teachers and students, and was then greeted to a musical feast by a group of the schools Transition Year students before they made him a presentation on behalf of the school.

The Minister was very impressed with the progress the school has made in recent years and acknowledged the commitment and dedication of staff and parents in their support of the school.

After a positive meeting between the Minister, school management, the CEO of Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim ETB, Seosamh MacDonncha, and local representatives, the school is hopeful of an imminent announcement of funding being made available to proceed with Phase 2.

Kilimanjaro Climb

Posted by on Sep 4, 2013 in Sports | 0 comments

We are holding a non uniform day on Friday 6th September 2013 to support James McTiernan who is climbing Kilimanjaro in order to raise funds for Northwest Hospice in Sligo.

We would ask all students to support the event and would like to wish James the best of luck on the trip.

James’ Kilimanjaro Climb

In May 2008 my younger brother, Aidan McTiernan, died as a result of melanoma cancer at the age of 25. From the time he was diagnosed as terminally ill, the Northwest Hospice in Sligo were fantastic in providing support not only to Aidan but to many patients and families across the Northwest region.

On September 12th, I will be flying to Tanzania to climb the highest free standing mountain in the world. Mount Kilimanjaro stands at 19,340 ft (5895m) and will take 6 days to climb.

I would ask you to give as generously as you can to this very worthy charity. Every euro donated will go directly to the hospice which will help ease the suffering and pain of a terminally ill patient.

You can donate at www.mycharity.ie /event/james_mctiernans_event

Thanks in advance for your support and generosity,

James McTiernan
